It's based on a book by Victor Hugo, and has a pretty involved plot, with lots of characters.

The main premise is this ex-convict Valjean is caught stealing, but is given a second chance and decides to devote himself to being a good guy. He starts a new identity and becomes successful, but is recognised by Javert, a by-the-book policeman, who relentlessly pursues Valjean for the next twenty years.
There's also a prostitute, Fantine, who he tries to help. (She was fired from Valjean's factory) She dies, and Valjean raises her daughter Cosette as his own, in a convent where they hide from Javert.
When Cosette grows up, she falls in love with Marius, who's this young student who gets involved in a rebellion against the government. The whole ending takes place when the rebellion happens and the riots are put down.
