Something completely lost on me while watching Sunday's Game of Thrones

I completely missed that whichever of the Tyrells was at the front of the charge at the end of the battle was wearing Renley's armor.

Did the book mention why this was done? To give the impression that Renley was attacking? To freak out Stannis's guys?

At any rate, I didn't recognize the armor at all - I didn't realize that's what it was til I was reading a recap this morning.
