There is a series called Strangers in Paradise where the author recognized he had done some things poorly and effectively started over again. Martin is aware of the ways he wrote himself into a corner and is authorizing the correction of it. If this were an author who had disavowed the production a la Anne Rice or Alan Moore, I'd at least understand the argument. Given this situation, however, it strikes me that you have the best of both worlds here. You are getting a reverential adaption of source material you love *and* the possibility that some of it will be enhanced with the blessing of the author. Just enjoy it. I'm one of the biggest fans of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo yet I loved the altered ending because it added an element of surprise to the story.
