Currently the latest one, by a friend from college:
"Sorry to hear that Brian. My condolences."

No specific mention of what happened, that might trigger more crying. No reference to religion ("prayers") or avoidance of religion ("thoughts"). As soon as I read it, I thought, "that's the perfect note to hit".
