We need to be protected from things that will harm us like tainted products.

I don't need the government deciding that my diet is crap and now I'm not allowed a large soda during a movie or a baseball game.
There's a place for the government in regards to keeping people healthy but this seems like they're overstepping their role. Put out warnings and put labels on the soda but don't tax it heavily and don't ban it.
