doesn't suffer people he thinks are beneath him kindly. He was happy enough to have him act in his stead but having him out of the picture, especially given his proclivities that he doesn't care for, is convenient enough to push him aside.
Note that he rode in on a horse so he wouldn't have to bow to Joffrey. Joffrey might be King by Twyin is where all the power is.
