I guess I just didn't care "why". At one point I had the thought that maybe they created us simply to be vessels for the alien facehuggers and then their weapon got away from them. That's just as good of a message as any. I wonder how much people are getting bent about it because they read so much about the movie before-hand. I didn't really so maybe I'm just lacking the context. Either way, I thought it was neat to find out about the space jockeys as well as the origin of the Aliens.
