all that is true, and yet,

the fact that "compromise" is now some sorta of satanic word to most republicans (and conservative talking heads) means that rommney cannot be any different. even is he wins, he loses when he tries to compromise (look at what happened to obama when he tried to compromise and the reaction from some liberal groups).

though, to be noted, is that many liberals groups seem to be adopting that same view.

conservatives dont want a compromisor, they dont want Reagan (even though they invoke his name), they want the most conservative control they can get, because even during the last bush, they werent conservative enough.
