re: AC. the best thing I ever did was deliberately get a north facing apartment. the previous one was south facing, and it was killer in the summer.

AC couldn't keep up and kept breaking down.
in the current place, I never get direct sun. SO much better.
Responses:
I have windows both north and south. Good/bad is that prevailing winds are east/west. Great in winter, not so good in summer when you'd like a breeze. -- nm
