generally (but not always) I find it better to shift my whole hand to the right fret when the fifth button is in use, then back left when it's done.

sometimes it's easier to just stretch, sometimes it's easier to keep my hand right, and stretch my index finger left. depends on the song, really. strumming both ways is good too.
