At the time, I had real difficutly expressing what I found surprising about this change.

It wasn't so surprising how all your hopes and fears and motivations quickly (and quietly) swung in a new direction, once your wife shoots out a kid. What was surprising was how natural it was.
Like waking up with one of your arms attached to the middle of your chest, instead of your shoulder. But you were already completely adjusted to it, and it didn't feel weird at all. That surprised me.
Though there were a few times, almost a year into fatherhood, where I looked in my rearview mirror and was still startled to see a carseat in the backseat. WHA HAPPENED?!?
