I went from a single medical practice at the hospital where I managed the information entry into a med. rec system and some technical stuff and was "The Computer" guy while there. I had enough time to do what they paid me for and then to help out with as needed emergencies.
I made half of what I make now but it had it's advantages.
Now I graduated to the official IS/IT organization and I definitely feel like a cog.
