Went to the local AMC (former Loews) with my 10 year old daughter. We got the pimp seats but not the 3D showing (they had awkward times for the showings with both options). The theater was packed -- regular seating was completely full and premium seating was about 3/4 full.
Trailers (that I can remember):
Ice Age -- This looked decent despite being (I think) a tired franchise. They lost me at "featuring Nicki Minaj and Drake". No buzz from the crowd.
Finding Nemo rerelease -- No buzz
Monsters Inc prequel -- Got good reaction. I hope this was just a teaser trailer, since it really consisted of just 1 gag.
Despicable Me 2 -- A ton of reaction from the kids
Some movie about a video game bad-guy who wants to be good -- It looked like it could be ok; probably a rental. Not much reaction.
Some Adam Sandler animated vampire movie -- Looked amusing enough if you can get past Adam Sandler. Got some positive crowd response.
The Hobbit -- Personally I had little hope for this film since the book is much lighter than LOTR. But I'm juiced after seeing the trailer. No reaction from the crowd. At all. My daughter's reaction was, "Didn't we already see that movie?" I think it was an odd choice to run this trailer with this movie.
The short: I generally love Pixar's short films, sometimes more than their feature length films. This one was good and heart-warming, not as laugh-out-loud funny as some of their previous shorts. My grade: B
The movie: 25 minutes after the posted showtime, the movie actually started. The story is nothing new, especially for Disney. Pretty standard stuff, fairly predictable though still enjoyable. I promised this would be spoiler-free, so I'll simply say that plot-wise it is nearly identical to a previous Disney animated film from several years ago. Some pretty good laughs throughout.
The voice work was decent though there were a few times it took me out of the movie. Kids might have a hard time with the accents.
The animation was fantastic. I've never done animation but I've always heard that hair is very difficult to animate to look natural. Between the girl's wild hair and an early scene with a waterfall, the animators have a lot to be proud of in this film. Really good stuff.
Sadly, as we reached the big crescendo leading to the climax of the film, the power went out to the theater. Power was restored in a couple of minutes but it took them about 20 minutes to get our movie going again. When they did, there was no sound and they had skipped ahead quite a bit to the big climax. We all yelled at the pimply-faced twit in the projector room to back it up but all he was able to do was stop the movie again. Then the manager came in and said they couldn't get it to restart and gave everyone free passes to a future showing. I suspect that too much time had passed and they needed to clear the theater for the next showing and it had nothing to do with the projector.
So, without having seen the end of the movie I'd give it a B+
