re: your hubby's ankle. I'm curious: did the Dr. say it needs to be immobile, or that he should move it around some?

I've had my share of breaks. The last one, I learned that not all breaks need to be immobile, especially if there are tendons located near them (e.g. at joints). Sometimes if there's a break at or near a joint, it's good to get it out of the splint and move it around some once in a while, so that when the bone sets, it doesn't displace the tendon so much. If it does, it could limit his movement even after you heal.
