So, we have this long running issue with an application running against our SQL server. They want me to send a backup of our database to them for troubleshooting. It is 300GB+. I was just sitting thinking about creating a new volume on our SAN to hold the backup, etc. when I realized, duh! We're on Netapp and I do snapshots every night of the database using their SnapManager for SQL product. I can just mount the snapshot LUN on my PC via iSCSI and copy it to the external drive. No extra space required!
I love Netapp. Plus, I realized I hadn't been backing up those LUNs to tape for weeks at the same time because they were new and I hadn't included them in the backup selection. DOH!
