I liked Wash and Jayne. Oh, and River in the raid on Niska. And I liked that it was a futuristic sci fi show without aliens (though presumably if it had continued, they might have found some - perhaps even at the very core of Alliance leadership). I also liked the space sequences, which were unique at the time for not having wooshes and other effects that make no sense in space (see also, the raid on Niska). Also, the organic/analog-style focusing on CGI effects was a departure from the norm at the time.
It set the trends such that watching it now, years later than you should have, portions of it seem rote.
