The fake landlord was a guy that had been hired to do work on the apartments in the house. He was given keys to do the work, made copies and then proceeded to rent out the apartments as if he was the landlord.
The real landlord was in the process of selling the house and hadn't been to the property in a month. He locked it up, put security bars on the windows and figured it was secure. The fake landlord went and cut off the chains and bolts that were on the gates.
The fake landlord had scammed three people. My friend, a young woman and an old blind woman. He scammed a blind woman!!! There's a special place in hell for people like that.
My friend is out $3,600. The young girl and the blind lady are out $2,400. My friend should be able to stay with family for a week or so while he gets more cash together to find another apartment. He's tapped out since he just dropped all his extra cash moving into this apartment.
I feel so bad for him and his family right now.

ugh. unfortunately, that kind of thing (minus the outright crazy) has been happening quite a bit locally with empty foreclosures.

This is legitimately one of the worst cons I've ever heard in real life. -- nm

Oops...there's more and this is the craziest part to me. The fake landlord called the cops.
