Life On Mars spoiler questions from last night

I have missed the last several episodes before catching the one last night. What is the deal with the tiny robots? The Russian engineer seemed to know something about them. Why did they come out of the Russian's and the dead old lady's eye? Do they have something to do with why he is in the seventies? Please spoil me on any clues we have as to wht he's doing back in time. Thx.
