he didn't really want to do the race/hadn't specifically prepped for it or something, but his coaches encouraged him to do it as it was the first day. he only needed to come in 2nd to continue; but it's gotta be a bit dimming, at least, to have that be the start, when he's still good elsewhere.
I was bummed about Janet Evans' comeback attempt not doing so well. aww.
