Krusty, if churches should pay taxes should other not-for-profits like the Red Cross?

Serious question.
Responses:
Not if they don't actually make a profit. Some churches make large profits and should pay taxes.

I drive by a *huge* church that went up a couple years ago that on it's grounds has a huge house where the minister lives.

Some people abuse it, so we should throw the entire system out?

Actually, yes.

While that's true, that doesn't mean that tweaking or improving the system isn't possible.

That's a governance problem in the church, not a problem with it being tax-exempt. -- nm

yes and no, they say a lot "the government doesnt require us to do yearly reporting, so we wont do it, no matter what" its a very common sentiment

Then you are in the wrong church. Ours is fully open for finances and publish the budget and quarterly updates for any member.

do churches have like BoD or BoT? because if only the pastor is making decisions, there *is* no governance. -- nm

depends on the chuch type probably. most baptist groups have deacons, or similar, and have a few "boards"

They should. Again, that's a problem with governance of the church.

Churches provide a lot of services that are also provided by not-for-profits. How do you square those activities?

The issue to me isn't what churches spend their money on, it's where they get their income from.

As I pointed out, the actual service entities should be seperate.

The can operate not-for-profit affiliates (like Catholic hospitals) to provide services separate from the functios of religious practice. -- nm

You're thinking big items. What about benevolence and other activities provided by churches?

They should be seperate entities if they want special tax status. Pretty simple imo.

i have no problem with them not paying taxes (well, except for their shenanigans with payroll stuff). i do think they should be required to report

IMO, no. The not-for-profit endeavors are different.
