The MSNBC article I read pointed out that many of those who opposed Obamacare opposed it because it didn't go far enough.

A Fox News editorial speculated that if the individual mandate was struck down, it would have ultimately led to the demise of private insurance as more and more people opted to go uninsured without penalty and moved into a government sponsored program when they fell ill.
