For what it's worth, I just did a cost estimator for an appendectomy (with a scope, so the less expensive kind), and here is what I got:

(this is for Houston, TX and would be for someone *with* insurance negotiating price down)
Surgeon - $1,935 - 3,219
Hospital - $12,057 - $15,051
Radiology/Lab/Supplies - $662-$702
I'm not saying Colin didn't get a quote of $3,000, but I would be *very* surprised if an appendectomy was required for an uninsured person and it wound up less than $20,000.
