it's not that he stabs Gosling...it's that Gosling; who's been so aware of every surrounding in the entire movie...allows a dude to stand right behind him when the bodies have been consistently hitting the floor for an hour straight.
If you fear someone's going to kill you; you don't turn your back to them while they stand 2ft from you.
