Supper is after theatre, dinner is before, and a supper club is what we would call a night club today with meals along with the drinks

and I think its from the victorian days when your main meal was early afternoon and at night you ate a smaller meal, usually a soup made from the leftovers.
my german grandmother lived like that, dinner was at 1 and at 4ish you had coffee with desserts, at 7 or 8 was a soup. breakfast was rolls with butter and jam
