Presumably the have a different/non-standard intent for their ceremony and vows.

Sounds like they are making a deep commitment to each other (the "to have or to hold" stuff) but not limiting themselves to only being with each other. I don't see that as pissing on the ceremony, it's just a different approach than most of us take
