Yeah, Kristol needs to chill. Why would Romney provide more content at this point in the campaign?

The economic and fiscal policies needed to help solve the economy's problems - and the ones that are more appealing to independent voters - aren't the ones that the Republican base wants to hear.
Providing details will not convince both the base and the centre, and whatever path Romney chooses to take, it provides Obama with an opening to win ground on the economy.
IMO, if Obama wins, it won't be because Romney lost, it will be because the Republican party still hasn't decided what it wants to be - a conservative party that basically works within the current system, or a radical party that wants to change the role of government.
