before I posted, I tried a version of those (among other things), which I'd used for normal non-Apple cords; but the long cable I've been wrangling is too thick and heavy to work with them.
the thread here gave me an idea of something else to search on, and I found this thing - it's pretty big and notsopretty; but! it's doing the job ok. :) -
