Travel-smart STers, I'm at a loss where to stay in Paris.

My brother and I will be there for two nights between London and Ireland. I've been, briefly, to Paris but he's never been out of North America, so obviously we will be doing touristy stuff (he specifically requested Eiffel Tower).
My main criterion is: be near metro station. But I know my brother might like to go out to a bar/club one night and I don't know where 'go-out' area of Paris is?
