Many of these are ongoing coverage over several days (Katrina, oil spill, earthquake, riots). Only a few are breaking news moments.

The "ongoing coverage" events belong more in the "news events of the century" or just "decade". Others are appropriate "eyes of the world turn to the TV" events. This list suffers from multiple personality disorder.
