Could it be a subtle ploy to get him exactly this PR and help to solidify him with the base?

He's not getting the NAACP vote. He, I, you, they know it. So why let the headlines read that he went in and softened his message for the NAACP when one of his real goals is to solidify the base? This can be sold as 'steadfast in principles, even with a crowd that disagreed' integrity type stuff.
I think this was planned. His campaign can't be that daft.
