here is how i see this relationship - he would spend every moment with her, she seems him sometimes, as a friend, whenever she's got some time to kill

say they are at the mall. they run into people they know. he spends the whole time saying things like "we just came from blah blah blah.. " and "we were at Bob's party last weekent and blah blah blabh." Lots of "we" talk, lots of implication of 'coupledom.'
SHE makes a point of clarifying that they aren't a couple. Possibly too pointedly, but, whatever, she's not misrepresenting anything.
HE thinks she being overly defensive.
