One thing artists don't tend to do well (at least in Canada) is articulate why art is important, and worthy of government funding

It's self explanatory to artists, but not so much to other people who have other priorities for their tax dollars go - especially when a lot of art isn't easily accessible to a lot of people.
And the government has to tread a fine line between promoting Canadian culture and subsidising lifestyles.
