RE: funding for the arts - I was just reading an old Chuck Klosterman article about the value of shared experiences

the article was really about Johnny Carson's death, but within it, he made a case that the shared experiences that we derive from things like art, music, film, sports, etc is crucial to society's well being because it connects us and fosters a sense of community and common purpose. without those shared experiences we feel isolated and unmotivated.

i think thats a good of a reason as any to fund the arts during hard times.

plus - do you really want all those artists out there flooding the job market?
