If we truly wanted profession and business to be self-sufficent, then you would have a very limited selection of food and other necessesities....

Anything made in the US with sugar is heavily subsidised. Lots of items (not only food) in the US anda Canada get very favourable treatment from governments. Both our economies would be very different if we truly made them all self-sufficent.
