The idea that the NEA supports artists is misleading

The majority of NEA dollars go to institutional support to non-profit arts and cultural institutions and to every state government in the form of basic state grants or specific programs originated by the NEA.
Individual artist support is a misnomer; individual artists can get support through some of these program grants.
