our youngest is 11 now. We *just* started leaving her home alone, and it's only been a few times.
I'm ok with leaving her alone if I run to the store and back. She has phone and if she needs us, as long as we're 5 min away we're ok with it. (I'm more comfortable leaving her than Suzanne is.) Suzanne won't go to Target (20 min away) and leave her alone yet, but she's slowly getting ok with it.
That being said, I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving her alone with a 5 year old - she's just not to that maturity level yet I don't think in case of an emergency. Plus having another 11-year old over? No way.
