We have had the most hellish week ever, since I moved here. The triple digit temps (108 today) I'm used to--but not until August usually.

So it's been 108,102,105, and 108 since Monday. Today was our highest humidity, it was 8 (eight!). We've also had winds from 15-30 mph the whole time. All that adds up to big time red flag warnings. Then the dry lightning/thunder storms started. Since Monday there have been 11 big fires, close to 400k acres, within an 80 mile radius of us. The worst one is close to Twin Falls, it started early Monday morning and it's just 60% contained, as of earlier today.

About 5pm Monday, a lightning strike ignited a small fire just past the 2nd Mountain Home exit on I-84. We live very very close to there. So we were just laying around watching tv and trying to stay cool when we heard all these sirens, helicopters, people shouting on bullhorns, etc. The sky started getting black and we went outside to look, but the smoke was so bad it choked us back inside. I changed the tv channel to the local news and found out that it had already spread to 500 acres. A few minutes later the news folks said the firemen were evacuating people from the north end of town. This included 2 big hotels, several restaurants and Walmart. We started to get really worried, that's literally 1/2 mile from our house. It got bigger and they evacuated to the golf course--we live a couple of blocks down the street from it. About that time, the wind shifted and it started burning back on itself. It ended up jumping all 4 lanes of I-84 and closed down the interstate for several hours. The national guard flew in firefighters from Oregon and Northern California (thanks guys!) and it was finally contained Tuesday evening. I've linked to a pic that was in the local paper below, at that point the front of the fire was less than a mile from us.
