He was set to become speaker of the house here (a chilling thought in and of itself). One of the Republicans broke from the party and voted with the democrats in order to make *himself* speaker. After that, the Republicans had nothing to do with him and he had to run for re-election as an independent. He is the only independent elected official in Tennessee right now.
