New episodes need to go online before the next episode of a show goes on the air, so people can catch up. And entire seasons should be available - especially on paid services like Netflix - before the next season goes on the air. It's how you build your audience.
Austin Powers proved this to great effect with the DVD release. And it's translated quite successfully to TV shows. But some people just won't learn.
