I'm changing my mind on Dark Knight Rises. I think it will beat The Avengers opening weekend record.

Three reasons for that:

1) It should earn a lot more than Avengers or Dark Knight did in midnight shows. Both of them did less than $20 million. At 3700 theatres at midnight tonight and the draw of this being the final Batman film, I think Dark Knight Rises gets close $40 million.

2) A record number of IMAX screens. 332 IMAX screens for Dark Knight Rises compared to 94 for The Dark Knight. That should pull in about $20 to $24 million just in IMAX theatres this weekend.

3) Sunday's dropoff should be much lower than Avengers was. Simply because it's the middle of summer now, and kids are out of school. That wasn't the case for Avengers and dropped 19% on Sunday. While that figure is insanely impressive, Dark Knight Rises should only drop 8 to 10%. Which doesn't sound like much, but could be an extra $6 to $8 million on Sunday.

The two big factors against it are no 3D theatres, and a longer running time. Still, I think the above factors are bigger than those two. My gut says for the fifth time in box office history, a Batman film will hold the opening weekend record.
