You want to be able to protect yourself and your family. That's important.
We have a society that is set up to protect us in the event of crime, but it can't really protect us *during* the crime - it can only act as a deterrent and post-crime enforcer of justice. Unless you're really lucky and the nature of the crime is such that the police can arrive in time (which does happen a decent amount of the time).
A situation like *this*, though, is just insanely off the charts. We don't have any way to actively disrupt it as it is in progress without introducing new elements and variables to society as a whole that could make other crimes more frequent (and certainly make them more deadly).
That's frustrating to no end when we hear about stories like this.
