The hypothetical borrower can go kick sand.

You don't return the car filled up, fine. Well, not fine, but whatever. If car is lent again, a point should be made of "return it with a full tank." Either the borrower does this, and things are fine, refuses those terms, even better, or disregards it and never gets to borrow a car again.
But returning with the light on means that person is loaned nothing again. They can't even have fries from a plate ownner is too full to finish (as if anyone is ever too full to finish fries). Unless they mention it, said they weren't sure about where the owner gets repairs/service, and agreed to pay for it.
