I agree with this, and my friend is certainly approaching things this way (at least externally)

I just don't know how serious things are, and so I (optimistically?) presumed they were minor. This e-mail made we wonder if things were more serious than I thought. My friend is only in his early 40s. Far too young for things like this, and yet....
I'm going to try to make the gathering as much as possible, regardless of how bad things may or may not be. I'm just trying to mentally prepare myself for how bad things may be.
