Generally, the wisdom was that the Sox would have entered around $8M, and Tek would have asked for $11-12M.

The Sox could have gone lower technically, but 80% of previous salary is seen as a reasonable lower bound for something an arbitrator might accept.
So yes, he unequivocally screwed the proverbial pooch.
