You don't necessarily have to "pay". At the IRS's website they have an entire list of companies that do your federal taxes for free.

No software to buy, nada. I always use taxact online, you have static ads on every page, but noting even distracting. Offering it up free gives them good wom, plus the people who buy-in to the idea that they couldn't possibly do their own taxes gives them name recognition.
