I have not read the books (I have a feeling, I'd like them considerably more) but get the sense that he liked the basics and wanted to then just have

what he considers 'shitloads of fun' with these adapted characters. It's an extremely dangerous thing to do since there are loyal fans of the novels. But he got lucky in that the actors he's chosen have created their own louder loyal following.
In essence, it really doesn't matter if True Blood is any good anymore.
