I've had a couple and neither relied on the handle.

press the button with the lock icon and it would just lock
enter the code and it would unock.
our last one also would lock out for a while if you entered the wrong code three times with lots of beeping and the pad would light up red.
the timer was optional as was an LED flash inside to show the status every 30 seconds or so.
