Some people are realising they they could earn more with a trade school certificate and manufacturing skills, than with, say, a college degree that

they may not be interested in.

Manufacturing is becoming more and more automated, which means that overall there'll be fewer jobs in manufacturing. But those jobs need more and more skills, which means they're becoming more highly paid. Manufacturing wages are higher than the average wage - in Ontario, at least, but I expect it's similar in the US.

It's good for the broader economy too. American companies are only going to keep their edge on certain products through maintaining a technological edge through (among other things) higher skilled employees. More successful manufacturing companies means more services can be sold to them - financial services, real estate services, legal services, R&D services etc
