Manufacturers have huge incentives to update their equipment, as a way to increase productivity and keep labor costs down.

That new equipment needs skilled people to run it. The likes of China and Mexico have us beat with regards to unskilled, low-paid labor. That's obvious. The US has an edge in skilled labor because of our educational institutions, but IMO it's only a matter of time before those countries catch up.
