I speculated this after Obama's election. I thought the GOP would fracture.

Instead, the party kept together by the brain-trust (the bigwigs in charge) pandering to the only group that would stick with them, their extremist base. Ultimately, the only way for them to win an election - barring Democratic stumbling, which is frankly very likely - is for the party to cut away that base. That means a split in the party and perhaps the birth of a new party.
